This Juneteenth, BFO will commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the US, by offering our Camping 101(intro) activity along with a cookout and visits to the The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the The National Memorial for Peace and Justice.  Whether you are an expert or novice, this adventure, We Remember: Camp Montgomery AL, is the perfect opportunity to explore the outdoors with your family, bae or by yourself in true Black Freedom Outfitters fashion.

This emancipation weekend, we will be camping along along the Southern Black Belt in Montgomery, Alabama exploring its rich history. We will pay homage to Black folks who  were hanged, burned alive, shot, drowned, and beaten to death by white mobs between 1877 and 1950. We will immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of the domestic slave trade, racial terrorism, the Jim Crow South, and the world’s largest prison system.

Additionally, we will be in the birthplace of the the bus boycott which was a political and social protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama. It was a seminal event in the civil rights movement.

Along with exploring the Museums, building with other participants and having a Juneteenth cookout, participants will have opportunities to create (individually or with a group) daily adventures such as canoeing (rentals available), biking (you must bring your bike) or driving through the history of the Montgomery Black Belt history. You truly will be able to choose your own adventure and build community

Lastly, throughout We Remember: Camp Montgomery, AL, you will learn the basics of camping. This adventure allows for participants to learn and practice practical skills such as setting up camp, pitching a tent, the makings of a camp kitchen, cooking outdoor meals, building a fire, etc. These skills should prepare participants with ample training and skill building to feel confident on future BFO and other outdoor adventure offerings.

So come build, learn and adventure with us this Juneteenth weekend at We Remember: Camp Montgomery, AL.
